About the Destination

Why Fish Scotland

Scotland is synonymous with fly fishing and it remains one of the finest destinations on earth for anglers who want to experience the sport at its most authentic. From the mighty River Tay, Scotland’s longest river and one of the most prolific Atlantic salmon waters, to secluded Highland lochs holding wild brown trout that have never seen a pellet, this is fishing steeped in highland traditions and surrounded by some of the most dramatic scenery in Europe.

Scotland offers fly fishing for everyone. In a single trip, you can swing flies for salmon on one of the big four salmon rivers: River Tweed, River Tay, River Spey and River Dee, or fish wee dries and wets to wild brown trout on a secluded highland loch, and explore over 400 rivers and streams where trophy trout are caught each year. Add in comfortable lodge and cottage accommodation, fine Scottish hospitality, and evenings spent with a dram of local whisky by the fire, and you have a fishing holiday in Scotland that is as much about the experience as the fishing itself.

We offer access to prime salmon beats on the big four, and wild brown trout & grayling fishing in smaller streams and rivers across the country. All paired with handpicked cottage and lodge accommodation in the heart of rural Scotland. Whether you’re a seasoned salmon angler or picking up a fly rod for the first time, we’ll build a trip around your ambitions.

ATLANTIC SALMON — RIVER TAY

Fish one of Scotland’s most famous salmon fishing river. The River Tay runs 117 miles from the slopes of Ben Lui in the west to the North Sea at Dundee. This is where Georgina Ballantine landed a 64lb salmon from the Boat Pool at Glendelvine in 1922. A British record that still hasn’t been beaten over a hundred years later.

Our exclusive beats offer classic fly water, deep holding pools, fast runs, and long glides where salmon rest on their upstream migration. Fish arrive from spring through autumn, with fresh-run fish entering the system from January and the main runs building through summer into the prolific autumn months.

Whether you’re an experienced salmon angler or want to learn the art of Spey casting, our ghillies will put you on the best water and guide you through every aspect of the fishing.

READ MORE ABOUT FLY FISHING IN SCOTLAND

Fly fishing in Scotland offers an extraordinary range of experiences within a compact and accessible country. The centrepiece of our offering is the River Tay — Scotland’s longest and most prolific Atlantic salmon river. The Tay system drains a vast Highland catchment, producing a river of real power and character. Salmon enter the Tay from early spring, with fish running continuously through to late autumn. Our beats offer classic fly water: deep holding pools with defined lies, fast streamy runs, and long glides where salmon rest and can be covered methodically with a Spey rod.

The Tay is the river where modern Spey casting was refined, and there is no finer place to learn or practise this elegant technique. Spring fishing typically involves larger flies fished on sinking lines, while summer and autumn allow lighter tackle and floating lines with smaller patterns. Sea trout also run the Tay and its tributaries, providing exciting sport particularly in the evening and after dark.

For trout anglers, our private loch offers something increasingly rare in Scotland: exclusive access to a beautiful Highland water holding a strong population of wild brown trout. Traditional loch-style fishing from a drifting boat — casting a team of wet flies on a short line ahead of the drift — is the classic method, though dry fly fishing can be outstanding during hatches. The River Almond adds variety: a pretty Perthshire spate river with pools, runs, and pocket water that reward careful wading and a well-presented dry fly or nymph.

The River Tay rises on the slopes of Ben Lui in the western Highlands and flows 120 miles east to the North Sea at Dundee. It is the largest river in the United Kingdom by volume and consistently records the highest rod catches of any Scottish salmon river. Our beats are located in the heart of the Tay’s middle section in Perthshire, where the river offers a mix of deep pools, fast runs, and classic fly water. The Tay’s size means it fishes well in a wide range of conditions — it rarely blows out completely and holds its colour well after rain.

The River Almond is a tributary of the Tay, flowing through the wooded valleys and farmland of Perthshire. It is a smaller, more intimate river — ideal for single-handed rod fishing and wading in a peaceful setting. The Almond holds wild brown trout throughout its length, with fish averaging 8 to 12 ounces and occasional specimens over a pound. It also receives a run of salmon and sea trout in autumn.

The Private Loch is set in the Perthshire hills surrounded by heather moorland and open sky. It holds a healthy population of wild brown trout that average around three-quarters of a pound, with fish over a pound taken regularly. The loch is exclusively available to our guests — no day tickets, no other anglers. A boat is provided, and the loch fishes well from the bank too. The setting is spectacular and utterly peaceful.

Perthshire sits in the heart of Scotland and is exceptionally well connected. Edinburgh Airport is approximately 1 hour’s drive south; Glasgow Airport is around 1 hour 15 minutes to the southwest. Both airports receive direct flights from across the UK, Europe, and North America.

Perth is also well served by rail — direct trains run from Edinburgh (1 hour 20 minutes), Glasgow (1 hour), and London King’s Cross (approximately 6 hours via the East Coast Main Line). For those driving, the A9 and M90 motorways provide straightforward access from both Edinburgh and Glasgow.

We provide detailed directions to your cottage or lodge accommodation upon booking. Airport transfers and car hire can be arranged on request. Once in Perthshire, all of our fishing waters are within a short drive of the accommodation.

For salmon fishing on the Tay, a 13 to 15-foot double-handed Spey rod in a 9 or 10 weight is the standard setup. A range of lines is useful: a floating line with polyleaders for summer and autumn, and a sinking tip or full intermediate line for spring when fish are lying deeper. Salmon flies for the Tay range from large tubes and Waddingtons in spring (Cascade, Willie Gunn, Park Shrimp) down to size 8–12 doubles and trebles in summer and autumn (Stoat’s Tail, Ally’s Shrimp, Cascade).

For trout fishing on the loch and River Almond, a 9 to 10-foot single-handed rod in a 4 or 5 weight is ideal. For loch-style fishing, a floating line with a long leader and a team of traditional wet flies (Black Pennell, Kate McLaren, Bibio, Soldier Palmer) is the classic setup. Dry flies (Griffith’s Gnat, Adams, Elk Hair Caddis) and small nymphs work well on both the loch and the Almond.

Quality tackle is available on request if you prefer not to bring your own. Our ghillies carry a full range of salmon and trout equipment.

What to pack: Layered clothing — Scottish weather is changeable and temperatures can range from 5–25°C across the season. A waterproof jacket and overtrousers are essential. Chest waders for the Tay; thigh waders or wading boots for the Almond. Polarised sunglasses, a warm hat, and midges repellent (essential June–September). A landing net for the loch.

Our fishing cottages and lodges in Scotland are handpicked for their comfort, character, and proximity to the water. Accommodation ranges from traditional stone cottages with wood-burning stoves to comfortable lodges with modern amenities — all set in the Perthshire countryside with easy access to the Tay, the Almond, and the private loch. Cottages are fully self-catering and well-equipped, with most sleeping 2–6 guests comfortably. Lodge options offer a more hosted experience with meals available.

Perthshire is one of Scotland’s most beautiful and accessible regions, with plenty to offer beyond the fishing. Whisky distilleries — including several Speyside and Highland producers — offer tours and tastings. Historic castles (Scone Palace, Blair Castle, Glamis Castle) are within easy reach. The surrounding hills and glens provide outstanding walking and hiking, from gentle riverside paths to more challenging Highland routes. Golf is everywhere — Perthshire has dozens of courses, including several championship layouts.

For non-fishing partners, the towns of Perth, Pitlochry, and Dunkeld offer independent shops, galleries, restaurants, and cafes. Scotland’s food scene has never been better, with locally sourced game, seafood, cheese, and baking widely available. A fishing holiday in Scotland is easily shared with someone who would rather explore the countryside, visit castles, or simply relax with a book by the fire.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

All levels are welcome. The private loch and River Almond are ideal for beginners and intermediate anglers — the fishing is accessible, forgiving, and our guides will teach you everything you need to know. Salmon fishing on the Tay benefits from some casting ability, but Spey casting tuition is available and many guests learn on the river. Our ghillies tailor each day to your experience level.

For salmon fishing, the Tay season runs January to October. Spring (March–May) targets fresh-run fish, often the largest of the season. Autumn (September–October) is the most prolific period with the highest catch rates. For trout fishing, May through September is the prime window, with the best evening rises on the loch from June onwards. A mixed trip combining salmon and trout is best from May to September when both seasons overlap.

No — quality salmon and trout tackle is available on request. If you bring your own gear, a 13–15ft Spey rod (9–10 weight) covers the Tay, and a 9–10ft single-handed rod (4–5 weight) covers the loch and Almond. Chest waders are recommended for the Tay; thigh waders or wading boots for the Almond.

We offer handpicked fishing cottages and lodges in the heart of Perthshire, all within easy reach of the River Tay, River Almond, and the private loch. Options range from traditional self-catering stone cottages (sleeping 2–6) to more hosted lodge stays with meals included. All accommodation is comfortable, well-equipped, and selected for its proximity to the fishing.

Pricing depends on the season, duration, choice of waters, and accommodation. Salmon beats on the Tay vary in price through the season, with autumn typically commanding premium rates. Trout fishing on the loch and Almond is more affordable. We build bespoke packages combining fishing, guiding, and accommodation to suit your budget — contact us with your preferred dates and we’ll provide a detailed quote.

Absolutely — Perthshire is one of Scotland’s most rewarding regions for non-anglers. Castles, whisky distilleries, outstanding walking trails, independent shops, galleries, and an excellent local food scene mean there is plenty to do while you’re on the river. The cottage accommodation makes it easy to share the trip with a partner or family, and we’re happy to suggest itineraries for non-fishing days.

Scotland does not have a national rod licence system like England and Wales. However, you do need a permit for the specific water you are fishing. All permits for the River Tay beats, River Almond, and the private loch are included in your trip package — we handle all the paperwork so you can focus on the fishing.
