The experience
An ancient predator in Mongolia’s northern wilderness
Taimen are ancient apex predators that call Mongolia’s wildest rivers home. Known as the “river wolf”. It’s a fitting name for a fish that can grow up to six feet long, strike with brutal speed, and sit at the very top of the river ecosystem. To hook one on the fly is to connect with one of freshwater fishing’s most powerful and mythical predators.
- You want to catch the world’s largest salmonid on the fly
- You like covering water from a drift boat with streamers.
- You want to see an apex predator crush a surface fly
- You enjoy dry fly fishing for trout and grayling
- You’d rather everything on the ground was arranged - permits, transport, camp, meals and guiding
- You want a comfortable wilderness camp, but you’re happy being remote and off-grid for the week.
Why anglers choose Mongolia: one of fly fishing’s last great wilderness frontiers, with a genuine shot at a metre-plus taimen and clear, lightly fished rivers all to your small group.

THE FISHING
Cast streamers and mice for metre-plus taimen
Your week in Mongolia mixes drift-boat fishing with time on foot, giving you different ways to cover the Sisegid and Tengis. From the boat you swing streamers and surface flies down and across through long runs, seams and tailouts. On foot you work upstream with a single-hander, picking apart pockets, eddies and structure where taimen wait in ambush.
The fishing is active, visual and often explosive. A taimen may track a fly for several metres before committing, or appear from nowhere to crush a surface pattern in a savage eat. When they take, they take with intent, and the fight can be as brutal as the strike.
More than taimen
Lenok and grayling when the taimen rest
Mongolia’s rivers offer much more than one trophy species. Alongside taimen, healthy populations of lenok, often called south-mouthed trout, and grayling provide excellent sport on lighter gear. Both respond well to dry flies, carefully presented nymphs and small streamers.
Swapping the taimen streamer rod for a light single-hander is a welcome change of pace. Fishing dries and small nymphs to lenok and grayling in the same wild rivers is great sport in its own right, and a memorable part of the week.
The water
Two wild rivers in the Siberian taiga
Hidden deep in Mongolia’s far north, the Sisegid and Tengis rivers flow through one of fly fishing’s last true wilderness frontiers. Each morning your guide makes the call on where to fish, choosing the water that gives you the best chance on the day.
The Sisegid is the broader, more powerful river, cutting through an open valley with long gravel runs, deep pools and boulder-lined edges. The Tengis is smaller and full of character, running through ancient larch forest and shaped by boulders, pockets and eddies, perfect ambush water for taimen.
Where you'll stay
Riverside camp in the taiga
On the river you’ll stay in a comfortable, heated safari-style wilderness camp set right on the bank, with hot meals, warm beds and the water a few steps from the door.
Either end of the trip you’ll have a night in a hotel in Ulaanbaatar, so you arrive and leave rested, with time for a little sightseeing in the capital.
The table
Mongolian and Western meals after long days on the water
After a full day on the river, you’ll return to camp to relax, warm up and share stories from the days fishing over a generous meal.
Food is a mix of traditional Mongolian dishes and familiar Western favourites. You’ll have breakfast each morning before heading out, lunch on the riverbank during the day, and dinner back at camp in the evening.
Full board is included throughout the fishing programme. Tell us about any allergies or dietary needs in advance and we’ll confirm what can be arranged.

“This was genuinely the trip of a lifetime. Mongolia feels like one of the last truly wild places left, and catching taimen on the fly made it even more special. The camp was comfortable, and the guides worked incredibly hard every day to put us in the right water.”
— Dan Porter · Seattle, Washington
Plan with confidence
The questions anglers always ask
Moderate fitness is enough. You’ll wade, fish from the bank and spend long days on the water, but there are no major hikes. The guides match the day to the group, the conditions and how hard you want to fish.
Northern Mongolia can be changeable, so good waterproofs and warm layers are essential. The programme is flexible, and your guides choose the best available water each day across the Sisegid and Tengis.
Taimen are wild fish, so nothing is guaranteed. Fish around 80cm are a realistic expectation, metre-plus taimen are the main target, and much larger fish live in these rivers.
All taimen fishing is strict catch-and-release. These are slow-growing, long-lived fish, so careful handling is part of the experience, and single barbless hooks are recommended.
No. The camp is remote, with no reliable mobile signal or wifi. You’ll be back in contact when you return to Ulaanbaatar.
The trip is guided and hosted, with two anglers per guide and boat during the fishing programme. You’ll fish as part of a small hosted group, so there’s a sociable camp atmosphere off the water.
No, but you should be comfortable fishing larger flies and full days on the water. For taimen a #9–#12 rod is recommended, and for lenok and grayling a #5–#6 outfit. The guides help fine-tune your casting through the week.
These hosted departures are in August 2027, a strong time for taimen, lenok and grayling on Mongolia’s northern rivers. The confirmed weeks are 6–17 August and 14–25 August 2027.
€5,750pp for the 12-day trip, door to door, with 7 full guided fishing days. Payment is also available in USD and GBP. A 20% deposit secures your place, with the balance due before departure. International flights are booked separately.
You fly into Chinggis Khan International Airport in Ulaanbaatar. From there, pickup, hotel transfer, domestic flights to and from Mörön, ground transfers and boat support are included.
Domestic flights, all transfers, fishing permits, 8 nights riverside camp, 2 nights in Ulaanbaatar, full board during the fishing programme, guide, host and boat support, and 7 full guided fishing days.
International flights to Ulaanbaatar, flies and lures, drinks, tips, personal expenses, travel insurance, single room supplement and anything not listed as included.
Yes. Travel insurance is required, and medical repatriation cover is strongly recommended. Consider cancellation and emergency medical cover too, as this is a remote wilderness trip.
We’ll always do our best to help where possible, but remote hosted trips have limited places and fixed logistics. Full booking and cancellation terms are confirmed before you pay your deposit.
