Our Bosnia Fly Fishing Trips

Guided trips on the wild rivers of Bosnia, run with our trusted local partner on the ground.

Gems of the North-West Bosnian Basin

A week on some of the clearest trout and grayling water in Europe. We guide you across the rivers of the north-west basin, including the Ribnik, Sana, Pliva, Janj, Sanica, Una, Unac, Krušnica and Vrbas, all breathtakingly clear.

These rivers sit within a compact region, but each offers something different: spring creeks, freestone runs, glassy flats, deep pools and fast pocket water.

The insect life is excellent, and the fish are wild and well-fed. Every day, you’ll sight-cast dries and nymphs to trout and grayling past 60cm. Accommodation, meals, transport and expert guiding are all taken care of.

Softmouth and Marble Trout in Southern Bosnia

Explore the turquoise waters of southern Bosnia and fly fish for softmouth and marble trout. The Neretva and Buna rivers rise in the Dinaric Alps and run cold, with an average temperature of 7–8°C throughout the year. This makes the river system an excellent summer fishery, when you can expect air temperatures in the high 20s.

This cold, clear water has helped preserve a distinctive river ecosystem where rare native species can still thrive. For anglers who want something different from the classic trout-and-grayling itinerary, southern Bosnia offers a wilder and less familiar side of Balkan fly fishing.

Balkan Hucho Hucho Safari

Two weeks chasing one of Europe’s largest salmonids across the wild rivers of Bosnia, Slovenia, Montenegro and Croatia. The hucho hucho is an elusive fish that rewards time on the water. We take you to rivers with some of the best remaining hucho populations in the Balkans.

Between sessions, you’ll get a proper taste of the food, culture and landscapes of these corners of eastern Europe. Accommodation, meals, transport and guiding are included throughout. This itinerary is built around rivers where local knowledge, timing and careful planning give you the best possible chance.

About the destination

Why Bosnia Belongs on Every Fly Angler's List

Bosnia gives travelling anglers a rare mix of clear water, wild fish, mountain scenery and genuine local character. You’ll fish rivers that run crystal clear and cut through white limestone mountains, creating a landscape that feels both unique and beautiful. When not on the water, you’ll visit market towns that date back to the medieval period.

The rivers here are wild and self-sustaining. Many of the best, including the Ribnik, Krušnica and Sana, sit within an hour of each other, so in a single week you can fish spring creeks, freestone runs and big open rivers without long days in the van.

The grayling grow large and willing, the brown trout are smart and beautifully marked, and the country holds rare endemics like the softmouth trout, found almost nowhere else. For those chasing the impossible, the hucho hucho prowls the bigger rivers, a predator that can top 20 kilos.

Bosnia is quiet, affordable and offers an adventure that can rival more far-flung destinations such as New Zealand or Patagonia.

Water So Clear You Sight-Fish All Day

Sight-fishing with dry flies in Bosnia is common. Good presentation and a stealthy approach are essential when stalking fish in clear water. Our expert guides will coach you on this exciting form of fishing. Nothing compares to watching a large trout or grayling swing across the current to intercept a well-presented dry fly.

Trophy bosnia grayling

Wild Fish and Big Ones

There’s no stocking truck behind these fisheries. Large wild brown, rainbow, marble and softmouth trout all call Bosnian rivers home. Then there are the free-rising trophy grayling that Bosnia is famous for. For anglers who want a bigger challenge, the hucho fishing is in a category of its own.

Our local partner knows which river is fishing best on any given day and plans your week around it. Practical info

The Best Time to Fly Fish Bosnia

The trout and grayling season runs from May to October. The early part, from May into June, is the pick for dry-fly fishing, when mayfly, caddis and stonefly hatches come thick and the fish look up.

High summer fishes well early and late in the day, with technical nymphing through the brighter hours. September and October bring settled weather, midday activity, and trout and grayling in prime condition.

Hucho hucho fishing opens in June, but November to February is the prime period, when higher winter flows encourage these predators to hunt during daylight. It is wild, breathtaking fishing, with a winter landscape to match. We’ll help you match your dates to the fishing you’re after when you enquire.

Testimonials

What Our Anglers Say

“I’ve fished in Montana for years, but I’d never seen rivers quite like these. The Ribnik and Sana were unbelievably clear, and we spent most of the week picking out grayling and trying to get the drift right. I managed my best grayling on a small dry, which made the trip for me. The guides were easy to be around, knew the water well, and the riverside lunches were excellent.”

— Mark R., Bozeman, USA

“I’m used to fishing chalk streams at home, so I thought I had a fair idea of clear water. Bosnia surprised me. Some days were technical, but our guide always seemed to know where we had the best chance. It felt like a proper fishing trip, not over-managed or overdone, and it was nice not having to fly halfway around the world for that kind of experience.”

— Andrew P., Hampshire, UK

Your guide to fly fishing Bosnia

Everything You Need to Know

From the rivers and the fishing to getting there and what to pack, here’s how to plan your Bosnia trip.

The Rivers & Region

The north-west of Bosnia is the heart of the fishing. The Ribnik is a short, spring-fed creek famous for its grayling and glassy flats. The Krušnica rises straight out of a cave and runs cold and clear from its first metre.

The Sana is a larger, classic river with a mix of riffles and deep pools, while the Una and its tributary, the Unac, carry rare softmouth trout alongside trout and grayling. The Pliva near Jajce, the small and pretty Janj near Šipovo, the Sanica and the Vrbas round out a network of waters that few countries can match for variety in such a compact area.

The Fishing

You’ll spend much of your day spotting fish and presenting to them, with dries through the hatches and nymphs when the fish are holding deeper. Euro-style nymphing is effective here, but so is a well-drifted dry to a rising grayling.

The hucho fishing is the opposite extreme. Big streamers are stripped or swung through the current to provoke an aggressive attack from this ancient predator, which can grow to over 20 kilos.

Getting There

Fly into Sarajevo International Airport, IATA code SJJ, and we’ll have a transfer waiting to bring you to your accommodation. From there, everything is arranged for you, including all transport between rivers throughout the week.

Most visitors from the UK, Europe, the US, Australia and New Zealand can enter Bosnia without a visa for short stays, but check your own requirements before you travel.

Tackle & What to Pack

For trout and grayling, a 9 to 10 foot rod in a 3 to 5 weight covers everything from delicate dries to nymphing the deeper runs. Bring fine tippet, because clear water and educated fish demand it.

Our guides are expert fly tyers, with one member of the team providing flies for the international Bosnian fly fishing team. You’re in safe hands, and there will be a steady supply of high-quality local patterns.

For the hucho safari, you’ll want heavier gear: an 8 to 10 weight rod and a selection of large streamers, plus warm waterproof layers for winter conditions. Pack for cool mornings even in summer, as the spring-fed water keeps the valleys fresh.

Beyond the Fishing

Bosnia is a reward in itself away from the water. The town of Jajce has a waterfall in its centre and a fortress above it. Sarajevo carries layers of Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian history within a few streets, and the food across the country is generous and hearty.

The Una valley is one of the most beautiful river landscapes in Europe, popular for rafting in the warmer months. Travelling companions who don’t fish will find plenty to fill their days.

The Balkans reward the curious. Leave room to enjoy the food, towns and landscapes between fishing days, and lean on your guides for the local knowledge that turns a fishing trip into a real experience.
