Golden Mahseer Fly Fishing · Indian Himalayas

FLY FISHING THE HIMALAYAS. WILD RIVERS. GOLDEN MAHSEER.

Rudyard Kipling called the Mahseer “the Angler’s Right of Passage — beside whom the Tarpon is a Herring.” In the fast-flowing rivers of Uttarakhand, where the foothills of the Himalayas meet ancient jungle, this legendary fish still runs. Now it’s your turn.

What makes the Indian Himalayas different? The Golden Mahseer — a fish of breathtaking beauty and sheer raw power, renowned for fights that leave even experienced anglers shaking. Rivers that cut through remote jungle-covered valleys in Uttarakhand, where leopards still roam and ancient temples sit at sacred confluences. And a fishing culture stretching back to the British Raj, when Jim Corbett and the Indian royalty made Mahseer fishing a rite of passage.

It’s also a destination run by experts. Our local partner has been running world-class Mahseer fishing expeditions from Pancheshwar since 2004. Based where the Saryu River meets the mighty Mahakali, this is considered the Mecca of Mahseer fishing in North India. Six days on the water, expert guides who know every pool and run, safari-style camps, and multi-cuisine dining in the wilderness.

The Experience

MORE THAN A FISHING TRIP

With our local partner, the fishing is an adventure of a lifetime and yet it’s only part of the story. Equal to the sport is the chance to immerse yourself in the unspoilt Himalayan wilderness: bonfire evenings under star-filled skies, elaborate multi-cuisine meals prepared by camp chefs, walks to ancient temples, and encounters with a way of life that has remained unchanged for centuries.

Our guides don’t just know where the Mahseer hold. They know the mood of the river, which pools produce trophy fish at different water levels, and exactly how to position you for the fight of your life. Whether you’ve fished your whole life or never picked up a rod, they’ll tailor every day to you, and make sure you leave with stories worth telling.

The Fishing

THE WATER

The Saryu River and its confluence with the mighty Mahakali at Pancheshwar form one of the most productive Mahseer fisheries in India. The fast-flowing, glacier fed Himalayan waters provide the perfect habitat for the Golden Mahseer, a fish that uses the current to its advantage, turning even a 5 lb specimen into a fight that tests your tackle and your nerve.

The fishing camp sits on the banks of the Saryu, with the jungle-covered mountains as a backdrop. Different stretches of river offer varied water from powerful runs below the confluence to more sedate pools upstream. The Goonch (Giant Devil Catfish), one of the world’s largest catfish species, also inhabits these waters for those seeking an additional challenge.

Species: Golden Mahseer · Goonch (Giant Devil Catfish)
Primary methods: Fly fishing · Spinning · Bait fishing (Goonch)
Tackle: Stout fly or spinning gear recommended · Guides advise on setup daily based on conditions
Practice: Strict catch and release on all trips

Saryu River · March–June & September–December

THE SARYU RIVER

Here you’ll fish the primary river for Golden Mahseer fishing at Pancheshwar. Its fast-flowing, clear waters run through a valley flanked by jungle-covered mountains — where deer, monkeys, langurs and the occasional leopard may be spotted. Each day the guides position you on different stretches — from fast runs and boulder-strewn rapids to deeper pools where trophy Mahseer hold.

Even a 15 lb Mahseer will put up a fight that is not for the faint hearted, using the power of the current to test every piece of your tackle. Larger fish are very much here isn’t uncommon, and for those willing to put in the work, larger fish are very much here to be caught

The Confluence · Prime Fishing Territory

THE MAHAKALI CONFLUENCE

Where the Saryu meets the Mahakali River lies the most prized fishing water at Pancheshwar — a confluence that has rewarded anglers with trophy catches for decades. This is hallowed ground for Mahseer fishing, where the merging currents create ideal holding water for the biggest fish.

The confluence is about 1½ miles downriver from camp, and by rotation you’ll fish this prime stretch during your stay. An ancient temple sits across the meeting of the rivers, accessed by an old suspension bridge — a photographer’s dream. Across the water, the border runs along the Mahakali, adding to the sense of true remoteness and wilderness that defines this corner of Uttarakhand.

What a Trip Looks Like

YOUR 10-DAY ITINERARY

Day 1 — Arrive in Delhi
Arrive at New Delhi International Airport. You’ll be met just outside arrivals by a chauffeur holding a placard with your name. Transfer to the Roseate House hotel in Aerocity — just a 5-minute drive from the terminal. Rest up after your flight and prepare for the adventure ahead.

Day 2 — Fly to the Himalayas
Early breakfast, then transfer to Delhi airport for your flight to Pantnagar, a town at the foothills of the lower Himalayan ranges in Uttarakhand. You also have the option of taking the early morning AC Executive Class train from Delhi to Rudrapur (3½ hours). From the airport or station, our vehicles drive you to the fishing camp at Pancheshwar — a scenic 5½ hour journey through the foothills, past the border town of Tanakpur on the Mahakali River, then uphill before descending into the valley where the Saryu River flows. On arrival, the camp manager gives an introductory briefing. Settle into your safari-style tents and enjoy a welcome drink.

Day 3 — First Day on the Water
After breakfast, you’ll meet your dedicated fishing guide who will accompany you for the duration of your stay. Bring out your fishing gear — your guide will suggest the right combination of rod, reel and line based on the river conditions and weather. Lures and flies are selected for the day. You’ll be briefed on your section of river and the plan for the day. After a full day of fishing, relax around the bonfire followed by dinner. Our chefs serve a range of cuisines — Indian, Continental, Italian and Chinese.

Day 4 — Exploring the Saryu
The fishing camp sits in a stunning location — backed by jungle-covered mountains where deer, monkeys, langurs and the occasional leopard may be spotted. In front of camp, the Saryu River runs with the tree-covered mountains rising on the far bank. Each evening your Head Fishing Guide discusses the next day’s plan with each guest. Fish different stretches of the Saryu, working the fast runs and deeper pools.

Day 5 — The Confluence
Today you fish the confluence of the Saryu and Mahakali rivers — about 1½ miles downriver from camp. This is the most prized fishing water at Pancheshwar, where the merging currents create ideal holding water for trophy Mahseer. Visit the ancient temple across the confluence, crossing the Saryu via an old suspension bridge. Both the temple and the bridge are a photographer’s dream. A packed lunch keeps you on the water all day.

Day 6 — Working the River
Continue fishing along the Saryu — your guide determines the best section based on conditions and what’s been productive. This could mean returning to a hot stretch or trying entirely new water. There’s also the opportunity to visit the local village school for a first-hand look at life in the remote corners of the Himalayas, far from the fast-paced cities.

Day 7 — Birds, Jungle and Mahseer
Wake to the cacophony of birdsong — Pancheshwar is home to a remarkable variety of birdlife. Our resident birding expert is happy to accompany any interested guest on a morning walk to spot various species. Then it’s back to the river for another day targeting the elusive Golden Mahseer on different sections of water.

Day 8 — Final Day on the Water
Your last full day of fishing. Walk across the river to visit the beautiful village on the far bank — view the local way of life, interact with villagers, and take in the scenery. Fish your final session. That evening, a special farewell BBQ dinner is arranged on the riverside. Lanterns light up the beach as a magical setting is created for your last night at camp.

Day 9 — Return to Delhi
Bid farewell to the camp staff and drive from Pancheshwar to Pantnagar (5½ hours). Connect with your afternoon flight arriving at New Delhi International Airport around 4:00 pm. You’ll be met outside arrivals and driven to the Roseate House hotel.

Day 10 — Departure
Inform the concierge of your flight time so your airport transfer can be arranged. Check out from the Roseate House (10 am) and transfer to Delhi International Airport for your flight home.

All itineraries are fully flexible — your Head Fishing Guide plans each day based on river conditions, weather and what you want most from the trip.

WHERE YOU’LL STAY

Your trip includes two nights at a premium Delhi hotel and six nights at a riverside fishing camp in the Himalayan wilderness.

READ MORE ABOUT FLY FISHING IN THE INDIAN HIMALAYAS

The Golden Mahseer (Tor putitora) is one of the most celebrated freshwater gamefish in the world. Found in the fast-flowing rivers of the Indian Himalayas, it combines breathtaking beauty — large golden scales that flash in the sunlight — with raw, explosive power. Rudyard Kipling famously described it as “the Angler’s Right of Passage, beside whom the Tarpon is a Herring and he who catches him can say he is a fisherman.” During the British Raj, fishing for Mahseer became a prestigious pursuit among British officers and Indian royalty alike. The legendary angler, hunter and conservationist Jim Corbett wrote extensively about pursuing Mahseer in these very rivers. Today, the Golden Mahseer is a protected species, and all fishing at Pancheshwar operates on a strict catch-and-release basis, ensuring future generations can experience the same thrill.
Pancheshwar is a remote village in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, where the Saryu River meets the mighty Mahakali. This confluence has been drawing anglers from around the globe for decades and is widely considered the finest Mahseer fishing destination in North India. The village sits at just 600 metres altitude, surrounded by jungle-covered mountains. An ancient Hindu temple stands at the confluence, and across the Mahakali lies the border. Life here moves at the pace of the river — slow, steady and deeply connected to the natural world. For visiting anglers, Pancheshwar offers something increasingly rare: genuine remoteness, abundant wildlife, and a fishing experience untouched by commercialisation.

If you’ve spent time spey casting for salmon, you’ll feel at home here and the techniques will be familiar, swinging sink tips through fast water, stripping and twitching streamers to get a reaction.

With a double-handed rod, it’s classic salmon fishing, working sculpin and minnow patterns through the current until something hits hard and heads downstream. Single-handed rods get paired with a sink-tip line, punching casts into eddies and holding water where Mahseer sit waiting to ambush.

But the real addiction is the surface take. Skating a popper across the top on a floating line, watching the wake behind it, and then a Golden Mahseer comes up and smashes it.

The guides switch flies and tactics throughout the day based on what the fish are doing. Fly or spinner, they’ll put you where you need to be.

Pancheshwar is not just a fishing destination — it’s a window into the wild heart of the Indian Himalayas. The surrounding jungle is home to deer, monkeys, langurs and the occasional leopard. Pancheshwar boasts a remarkable diversity of birdlife, and a resident birding expert is available to guide interested guests. Cultural encounters are woven into the experience: visits to the ancient temple at the river confluence, walks across a historic suspension bridge, and excursions to nearby traditional villages where you can interact with local communities and visit the village school. For photographers, every turn reveals a new composition — from the dramatic river gorge to the temple’s weathered stone. Optional side trips can be arranged including Delhi sightseeing, the Taj Mahal at Agra, a wildlife safari at Corbett National Park, or the Golden Triangle tour of Delhi, Agra and Jaipur.
